When I woke up this morning I had no idea what an amazing day was in store for me!
We headed down to Lake Matheson early in an attempt to get photos of the mirrored lakes but 20 mins into the 1.5 hr traverse around the lake and the heavens opened. We retreated with our tail between our legs and decided to get some breakfast at Matheson Cafe and hope the weather would pass in time for our helihike.
The weather did clear for us and shortly after breakfast with views of the mountains we would shortly ascend we were on our way in a helicopter up Fox glacier. The helicopter ride was scary to say the least! I was certain that our pilot was a stunt pilot from a James Bond movie. Nevertheless we got onto the glacier in one piece and started our 2.5 hr climb.
Along the way we came across some ice caves, waterfalls and streams of melting ice with the most refreshing water, especially after an hour of strenuous climbing and careful negotiation. Towards the end of our hike as we reached the highest point before starting our descent Ed dropped on one knee. I immediately started berating him for slacking off and it was only when I saw the petrified look on his face and him rummaging for something in his pocket that I realised what was happening. Almost on que it started snowing as he presented me with a ring he made from a 1 dollar bill as a temporary ring until I chose something I liked. (Pics to follow in a separate blog)
The day got even more eventful when our back side window fell out of our campervan and we were forced to make do with a piece of 1mm perspex stuck on for the rest of the trip.
